You will go to a new continent, but you might just do the Werehog level before being sent somewhere else to do two more Werehog levels, then get sent back to an earlier continent to do the daytime level, it's kind of all over the place. Eggman split the planet up so you have to put all of the continents back together) when all you want to do is just get to the next level. It's not always clear what you need to do next and you'll be bouncing back and forth between all of the continents (Dr. Fortunately Sonic Generations rectified this somewhat (did Colours do the same? Never played that one), but it's very annoying to constantly be sent back to this overworld and be told to go report to this professor or collect tokens which will open the gate to the next level (seriously, one level prevented me from entering unless I collected more moon tokens). I would have been totally happy with the more streamlined 'stage, stage, boss' structure of the older games with cutscenes sprinkled between. These parts of the game drag on too long and really hurt the momentum. Between each level you are sent to hub world in which you take side missions, find collectibles and talk to some of the ugliest NPCs you've ever seen.

The thing that makes this game annoying to play is how little it seems to want you to actually play it.

You're not having to worry about the game diving below 20FPS at least, if you play on an Xbox Series console. There's things to criticise but they aren't the thing that holds the game back in my opinion. It really does feel like God of War for kids at times, and I don't think that's a bad thing necessarily. It can even be kind of satisfying in a pure button-mashing Dynasty Warriors kind of way. Some of the platforming parts are a bit clunky and the combat's overall a bit basic, but it's okay. When I say GOW I of course mean the older ones (this came came out in 2008).Īt the time of release the Werehog levels were panned pretty hard but now that the game runs well, I'd say they're not actually that bad. The regular Sonic levels are high-speed obstacle courses you'd expect from Sonic, but during the night levels it turns into a God of War ripoff (really, it's quite amusing just how much it copies GOW). So the main gimmick with this game is that Sonic gets transformed into a 'Werehog' (the word makes no sense because the were in werewolf means human, but whatever), and the game is effectively split into two halves the daytime levels in which you play as regular Sonic and the nighttime levels where you play as the Werehog.

Since the game never came out on PC this is effectively the first time it's ever really ran like this, kinda crazy to think that it's been held in a sub-30FPS prison for so many years.

And for the most part, it's pretty great - the environments hold up pretty well and it's really nice to play at a good framerate.

I originally played this back on the PS3 but bounced off it pretty quickly because of how poorly it ran, so I was pretty excited when they announced they were giving it the FPS boost treatment on Xbox to make it run at 60FPS.
