There’s also the fact that Ares is the father of Eros, so this could Primordial Eros, a being older than Gaea. But when Ares mocked Eros, he fell in love.

A few things, this myth mirrors the myth of Apollo and Daphne, except when Apollo mocked the size of Eros’ weapon, Eros cursed him. Eros agreed the spear was too heavy for him, and handed it back, and when Ares and Aphrodite both touched the spear, they fell in love. The only version I found had Ares taunting Eros’ small bow compared to the size and weight of Ares’ spear.
